P.S. — I remember vividly the day, the track, the corner, the car where it all came together for me. My home track, Westwood, in a Formula Ford, on a cool but surprisingly dry day in early spring in the Pacific Northwest. I’d gotten a great exit off of Turn 3, leading onto the long back straight, up over Deer’s Leap, and now I was approaching the tight, not-quite-180-degree-downhill-approach-and-uphill-exit Turn 4 hairpin.

With the rise in the track just past the turn-in (the image below shows me in my FF at that point on that track), I targeted my vision. Braking late — and yet not completely sure where I initially applied the brakes until I noticed the “3” board flashing past peripherally — it was like each tire was clawing at the track surface for grip, the car dancing on the edge of control. Turning in crisply, I un-squeezed the brakes, controlling the car’s balance and rotation, arcing towards the apex at the drainage notch in the inside curbing. Both understeering and oversteering at the same time, the transition from decelerating to accelerating felt seamless, me and the car — as one — driven towards the exit curbing by the throttle, the straightening of the steering following. Launching up the hill as strongly as any 112.5-horsepower Formula Ford ever had, I headed towards the Esses to take pole position.

My face is consumed by a smile replaying that corner, just like it did inside my helmet that day. And many, many times since, over the past four decades, it all came together for me at another track, in another car, on another day.

Because not every corner on every day comes together like that, I’ve spent the past four-plus decades studying, experimenting with, and trying over and over other corners — both as a driver and coach — to match that same result.

It’s what drives me (no pun intended) even now, as I love helping drivers like you get that feeling: the smiles from putting together the braking, cornering, and accelerating — like the perfectly-prepared meal, a Mozart symphony, a well-executed scoring drive in football….

It’s why I get up every day, think about driving, talk about driving, write about driving, study driving… and drive. Thanks for letting me have fun sharing this story with you.
