Technology can work to our advantage to provide the answers we seek. However it comes with one important caveat- how well does AI answer your Auto Related Questions?
In the automotive field (as well as virtually any other), the information you seek is usually very specific such as an exact capacity, part number, location of part. Just because the (AI) search assistant can pull from one or two of the search results that come up in a search does not mean that the information is correct or specific enough.
Recent Incorrect or Inaccurate AI Answers
Here is a good example for an inquiry: “Where is the oil filter located on a 1981 Turbo Trans Am?” The supplied answer is, “The oil filter on a 1981 Turbo Trans Am is typically located on the engine block, accessible from underneath the vehicle. It is important to ensure proper access to avoid spills during oil changes.” Of course the filter is location on the engine block! But it did not state that it is actually above the exhaust manifold on the passenger side.
Another question- “What size radio fits in a 1970 Chevelle?” The assistant’s answer- “The 1970 Chevelle requires a radio with a specific size and shaft spacing that fits the dash without modifications. Typically, radios designed for 1969-1972 Chevelle models will fit, including options like the AM/FM Bluetooth® reproduction radios.” What kind of answer is that- No type or dimensions listed?

Incorrect Coolant for Stock Packard
One more- “What engine coolant is recommended for a 1940 Packard?” AI generated answer-

Correct Coolant- Valvoline Multi- Vehicle
“For a 1940 Packard Model 1808, the recommended engine coolant thermostat operates at a temperature of 180°F. It’s important to use a coolant that is compatible with this temperature specification for optimal engine performance.” Totally no answer there! In fact, there are coolants shown below that answer that are completely wrong for a stock Packard- Zerex Dexcool, Peak OET Extended Life Orange. The Valvoline Multi-Vehicle 50/50 Ready-to-Use Antifreeze is the only one shown that is accurate. (You would only use the first two if a modern drivetrain was installed in the vehicle.) There is even a small disclaimer in small print above the products shown- “Auto-generated based on listed sources. May contain inaccuracies.”
The Bottom Line
So the moral to our story is that you need to do your own research on several sites. Make certain the information you seek is confirmed to be correct. Consult a modern service manual if available or better yet, ask one of our professionals who work on these vehicles. It is true that as time goes on, AI technology will provide more specific and correct answers. But regardless, you should continue to click on various search results to consult the real experts– Alan Power
