“Evening with a Legend” September 20th at 7:00 PM (EDT), Margie Smith-Haas: Pioneering the Legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans
Born with an insatiable need for speed and an unwavering determination to break barriers, Margie Smith-Haas etched her name into the chronicles of motorsport history as the first American woman to engage in the world’s most hallowed trials of endurance racing, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In 1984, racing a Porsche 930 Turbo Group B/GTO she made history as the first American woman to race at Le Mans and the first American woman to race at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Le Mans 24 Hours. In 1985 Margie drove a BMW/ URD C2 as the only woman to compete at Le Mans in 1984/1985. Following her pioneering efforts, Margie’s unwavering zeal compelled her to embrace racing as more than a mere pursuit.
In 1994, her aspiration to claim championship glory was realized as she clinched the American City Racing League Driver and Team Championship as the first woman to win a Professional Road Racing Driver Championship in North America, an accomplishment she wholeheartedly attributes and dedicated to the steadfast support of her husband, Paul.
Margie’s remarkable journey serves as a testament to the power of unyielding perseverance and unwavering self-belief, proving that talent knows no gender and the spirit of competition drives individuals to conquer life’s most challenging terrains.
If we had to describe Margie in two words, “Pioneer” and “Fearless” would rise to the top of the list.
