Themed Showboards
SHOW BOARD
Also known as a Show Sign, Story Board, or Leader Board, it’s a detailed description of a car’s history or a list of standard features/options. Otherwise, this board itemizes modifications displayed with the car at shows to educate spectators and fellow enthusiasts. (Of course, Car Show Life show boards are the best around according to this author! 😊)
ORIGINAL VEHICLE RELATED TERMS
PERIOD CORRECT – An upgrade or replacement part that is not original to the vehicle but originates from the same era that the vehicle was produced.
DATE CORRECT – More specific than period correct, date-correct refers to parts or components that come from the same period of production as the vehicle. Theoretically the car could have been built with these items. For example, a car with a blown engine might have a replacement block stamped with a date code that is from the time when the car was assembled.
NEW OLD STOCK OR NOS – Parts stored on a shelf for years. They are new parts but from older stock for previously manufactured models.
NUMBERS MATCHING – All major components on the vehicle share the same stampings from the factory. These usually include the engine block, chassis, transmission case and rear-end housing to authenticate originality.
RPO – Regular production option. Designated by codes, these are the options that are offered by the manufacturer, usually in packages or groups for ease of production.
COPO – Central Office Production Order. This refers to cars from General Motors that were ordered outside the usual dealer channel to create high performance combinations that were prohibited with the RPO system. COPO is still in use today for commercial packages and fleet sales, but not the way it was made famous in the 1960s and early 1970s.
RESTORED VEHICLE TERMINOLOGY
ROTISSERIE RESTORATION – Separating the body from the chassis and placing that body on a rotisserie to address all the repairs necessary in order to restore a car. This is considered the ultimate restoration by the “experts.”
FRAME OFF RESTORATION – A restoration process that involves removing the body from the chassis to address repairs on both portions of the vehicle but not necessarily as detailed as a rotisserie restoration.
BODY ON RESTORATION – A restoration process that is done without separating the body from the chassis.
TEN-FOOTER – Slang for a car that looks good from a distance but shows flaws when viewed up close.
MODIFIED VEHICLE TERMINOLOGY
RESTO MOD – This has two meanings. Restored and modified, a car that has been restored to stock appearing but modified from original. Popular examples include upgrading electrical systems from 6 to 12 volts or adding dual reservoir master cylinders with disc brakes. Common comfort add-ons consist of changing from bias ply to radial tires or adding A/C. The more common meaning is restored and modernized, a car that appears stock but has more modern running gear and drivetrain.

Phantom Olds Ute
PHANTOM – A car that has been built that could have been a factory design, but truly never existed. For example, an Olds 442 Ute was created by grafting a rear-end damaged Olds Cutlass 442 with the back-half of a Chevy El Camino. The VIN decodes as an Oldsmobile with its original core support. The owner took great pains to ensure that it had proper Olds badging and trim from a Cutlass Wagon.
GREATEST HITS – A car that shows styling cues or components from multiple generations of that model. For example, a 5th Generation Camaro with Z28 Stripes, T-Tops, Louvers, “Sombrero Center” Rally Wheels, and RS Hideaway headlights could be considered to be a “Greatest Hits” of Camaro options.

Protouring Camaro
PRO TOURING – A build style that emphasizes power and handling equally.
PRO STREET – A build style that is inspired by straight-line drag cars. Many times they include roll cages and other racing gear.

Camaro SYC Tribute
TRIBUTE/CLONE – This is a car that is restored to resemble a rare combination of options it was not born with. For example, a Yenko or COPO clone is a car that may have started out as a 6-cyl Sport Coupe or a lightly optioned RS. It was then modified with the correct parts and options to resemble a true YENKO or COPO car. Since those cars are rare and highly prized, one could opt to restore their car as a tribute for a fraction of the value.
CHOPPED – This is a customizing technique that lowers the roofline by cutting or chopping the pillars and glass resulting in a low-profile look.

Chopped, Channeled and Sectioned Charger
CHANNELED – This is a customization technique performed on body-on-frame vehicles where the body is lifted off the frame. The floor panels are cut away and reinstalled higher inside the body. Now the body rests on the frame in a lower position without any changes to the suspension geometry.
SECTIONED – This is a customization of the body where an entire section of the fenders, doors and quarter panels are removed from the mid-line or thereabout. The upper and lower sections are welded together for a lower profile look.
