SUMMARY:WDCR SCCA Virtual Racing League Spring 2023 Season\, Round #7
DESCRIPTION:Hey everyone! Who wants some more thrilling racing? I know I do!\n \nLast week\, we took our GR86s around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Road Course\, where we had three awesome races! In Race 1\, DJ Alessandrini passed Morgan Burkhard at the penultimate corner to take victory by not even two-tenths of a second! In Race 2\, Morgan Burkhard followed in DJ Alessandrini’s steps and passed Ken Houseal in the penultimate corner\, leading to a drag race to the line where Burkhard would win by 0.02 seconds! And in the Main Race\, Morgan Burkhard would take home the win over Andrew Pallotta. Great job to all involved; that was some fantastic racing!\n \nThis week\, we’re heading to the home of the Motor City with Detroit’s Belle Isle Street Circuit! First raced in 1992\, This track quickly became a fan and driver favorite! With the tricky layout and track surface\, there’s barely a moment of reprieve at this former staple of the IndyCar Schedule!\n \nJoin us Wednesday\, March 8th at 8:00 on SYM TV as we take our GR86s around this tricky street track in the Motor City! Hope to see you there!\n

SUMMARY:Cornering Masterclass (by Ross Bentley) - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve already registered for the Cornering Masterclass\, you can ignore this email. \nIf you haven’t\, this is just a quick reminder that registration for the webinar closes at midnight on Monday\, February 20th (Pacific time). Yes\, that’s less than three days from now. \nTo register\, go to SpeedSecrets.com/Cornering-Masterclass and click on the big Register button. Or\, click on the green Register button below. \nI hope I get to coach you in the Cornering Masterclass. \nKeep learning and having fun! \nREGISTER FOR THE CLASS \nRoss \n\nP.S. — I remember vividly the day\, the track\, the corner\, the car where it all came together for me. My home track\, Westwood\, in a Formula Ford\, on a cool but surprisingly dry day in early spring in the Pacific Northwest. I’d gotten a great exit off of Turn 3\, leading onto the long back straight\, up over Deer’s Leap\, and now I was approaching the tight\, not-quite-180-degree-downhill-approach-and-uphill-exit Turn 4 hairpin.  \nWith the rise in the track just past the turn-in (the image below shows me in my FF at that point on that track)\, I targeted my vision. Braking late — and yet not completely sure where I initially applied the brakes until I noticed the “3” board flashing past peripherally — it was like each tire was clawing at the track surface for grip\, the car dancing on the edge of control. Turning in crisply\, I un-squeezed the brakes\, controlling the car’s balance and rotation\, arcing towards the apex at the drainage notch in the inside curbing. Both understeering and oversteering at the same time\, the transition from decelerating to accelerating felt seamless\, me and the car — as one — driven towards the exit curbing by the throttle\, the straightening of the steering following. Launching up the hill as strongly as any 112.5-horsepower Formula Ford ever had\, I headed towards the Esses to take pole position. \nMy face is consumed by a smile replaying that corner\, just like it did inside my helmet that day. And many\, many times since\, over the past four decades\, it all came together for me at another track\, in another car\, on another day. \nBecause not every corner on every day comes together like that\, I’ve spent the past four-plus decades studying\, experimenting with\, and trying over and over other corners — both as a driver and coach — to match that same result.   \nIt’s what drives me (no pun intended) even now\, as I love helping drivers like you get that feeling: the smiles from putting together the braking\, cornering\, and accelerating — like the perfectly-prepared meal\, a Mozart symphony\, a well-executed scoring drive in football…. \nIt’s why I get up every day\, think about driving\, talk about driving\, write about driving\, study driving… and drive. Thanks for letting me have fun sharing this story with you.

SUMMARY:Cornering Masterclass (by Ross Bentley) - Part 1
SUMMARY:WDCR SCCA Virtual Racing League Spring 2023 Season\, Round #5
DESCRIPTION:Hello again WDCR! Who wants some more iRacing action? I know I sure do!\n \nLast week we took a break from our GR86s\, got behind the wheel of some GT4s and drove around Bathurst where DJ Alessandrini qualified his McLaren 570S on the pole and proceeded to take home the grand slam by also winning\, leading every lap\, and having the fastest lap. Congrats DJ\, very well done!\n \nThis week\, we’re back in our GR86s as we head down south to one of the premier tracks in the United States\, Barber Motorsports Park! Opened in 2003\, Barber quickly became a fan favorite when IndyCar started racing around the track in 2010. When racing at Barber\, you must get every small corner right because if you don’t\, you could cause you to lose heaps of time to the cars behind. This track has proved time and time again that it can provide great racing and some thrilling finishes!\n \nIf you want to see this excellent racing\, join us Wednesday\, February 22nd at 8:00 on SYM TV as we bring our GR86s back out and continue this awesome season! Hope to see you all there!\n \n\n \nFor more information on Washington DC Region’s iRacing program\, visit https://www.wdcr-scca.org/virtual-racing or e-mail us!\n

SUMMARY:Richmond Auctions - Rolls-Royce Neon
DESCRIPTION:It’s long been debated that neon made its debut in the United States at the corner of 7th and Flower Streets in Los Angeles\, California with a massive “Packard” sign illuminated high over Downtown L.A. atop a large hotel. Earle C. Anthony\, the owner of the dealership\, was said to have become enamored with neon while visiting Paris\, France and ordered two or three Packard signs to promote his dealerships. The quantity of signs is also up for debate\, as are the prices he was said to have paid. But\, while most say the sign lit up the L.A. skyline in 1923\, researchers show that in reality it was likely 1925 when the sign was installed. Research goes on to suggest that the first west coast neon may well have been lit up in 1923\, oddly on another Packard dealership owned by Anthony\, but in San Francisco on Van Ness Avenue. Granted\, hard evidence supporting the 1923 San Francisco claim has been evasive. Meanwhile\, New York City vies for the claim of first American city to employ neon\, with evidence suggesting 1923 as the earliest use\, as seen in a 1923 New York Times article. It’s all exquisitely interesting\, considering Richmond Auctions will be selling a stunning Rolls-Royce dealership neon sign that is seen on the side of a building at the corner of 58th and 8th in New York City in a 1924 photograph. This intersection is known as Columbus Circle and was once a hub for luxury retailers\, including automobile agencies. What a piece of history this is! More than likely a one-of-one created exclusively for this Columbus Circle dealership\, it was discovered while the Manhattan building was being renovated\, tucked away behind a wall. Fascinating. See more about Richmond Auction’s lot 502 below. \nRegister to Bid\n\n\n\n\nEXCLUSIVE SPECIAL EDITION NEWS\n\n\n\n\n \nAbout the Sign\nThis single sided porcelain neon (SSPN) sign is the only known example and has exceptional color and gloss. Evidence suggests the sign was displayed above the entrance of the Manhattan showroom of John S. Inskip\, the largest importer of Rolls-Royce automobiles in the United States. The sign was discovered while remodeling a Manhattan building and put in storage. The field has two tiny chips\, smaller than an eraser\, with some staining in areas of the white lettering. It has minor chipping at the insulator holes and neon standoffs. The sign is mounted on a bespoke\, Art Deco-styled can comprised of mirrored stainless\, brass and blackened steel\, and displays exceptionally well. The transformers and glass tubing are all new and the sign is in excellent working condition. Measures 27″ x 106″. Rated 9C by The Authentication Company (TAC #008368). See it here. \nRegister to Bid\nAbout the Location\n \nIn the 1920s\, Columbus Circle in New York City\, or Automobile Row as it was called\, was home to the poshest\, luxury car showrooms in the nation. Pierce Arrow\, Essex\, Packard\, Cadillac\, and of course Rolls-Royce all had a Broadway or Eighth Avenue address.  Several notable automobile tire manufactures resided there as well\, such as Fisk Tire and U.S. Tires\, which had neighboring buildings. Kelly Springfield also had their offices and showroom on the Row.  All the locations\, as well as the Colonnade\, were clad with neon and lighted milk glass signage.  Broadway and the Row were all participants in the “lighting wars” that were taking place in NYC.  Every retailer needed to one up their neighbor\, therefore\, New York saw some of the earliest and most advanced neon signs in the United States. \nRolls-Royce had one of the most opulent and best located showrooms of them all. A 1923 New York Times front page article described the uptick of the Row and how decor and lighting by Tiffany Studios of New York would be used specifically in the Rolls-Royce large retail space.  The showroom resided in the ornate Colonnade building with an entrance on Eighth and 58th St. The building has seen many overhauls\, but still stands today.  Construction began in 1920 and the first published tenant was Hudson Motor Cars to display their premium Essex line of cars.  Soon after\, Rolls-Royce as well as Nash moved in.  At that time\, the building was just three-stories tall.  In 1926\, General Motors took aim on moving their NY office to the center of Automobile Row and purchased the Colonnade.  It was rebranded the General Motors Building.  With the new name came its largest overhaul and 22 additional floors were added to the building. Rolls-Royce was registered as a tenant through 1931 and then moved to their own newly completed building on 57th. \nAs the building shows today\, it is clad with glass and a steel exoskeleton\, the result of a major overhaul that was completed in 2010. Along with its new face\, the address was also amended to 3 Columbus Circle.  It was that exterior overhaul that revealed the Rolls-Royce Porcelain Neon Sign face that has been hiding in a marquee wall covered over for nearly a century.  To this day\, the double door entrance at the corner of 8th and 58th remains.  A Chase Bank lobby now resides where the lavish showroom once did\, with ATMs and teller desks now occupying the space rather than some of the most expensive cars of the time that were purchased by leaders of industry in the Roaring Twenties. \nRegister to Bid

SUMMARY:Artie Mayhew Memorial Winter Driving School #2
DESCRIPTION:2023 Artie Mayhew Memorial Winter Driving School #2 // Saturday Feb 18th\nNEQ is pleased to announce our second Winter Driving School for 2023. \nThis is our chance to get back on the ICE!!!  \n\nThese events are held on lake ice with areas car control exercises including a skid pad area\, and slalom area as well as a 1.0 – 1.5 mile road course on the ice.  This event is open to all members and non-members interested in honing their low friction driving skills. \nYou’ll perform exercises in the morning designed to improve your car handling skills on low friction surfaces followed by lapping on a prepared track in the afternoon. NEQ Club instructors will be on hand to help you learn car control techniques. We especially encourage new drivers and even those with learners permits to attend to develop car their control skills.  \nThe location (to be confirmed) will likely be one of the usual lakes – Lake Algonquin in Wells NY\, Caroga Lake\, Caroga Lake NY and Warner’s Lake near East Berne NY a few miles east of Albany.   \nAs in the previous years we will be working with AMEC with our event held on Saturday prior to their races on Sunday.  We follow their racing schedule which determines the final location. AMEC members will be on the ice with us at this event to lend their expertise and “scratch up the ice” with studded tires to improve traction for us. I encourage you to ride with them an seek out their knowledge that comes from many years of experience of competitive driving on the ice. \nAs always with lake-based winter events we are at mercy of the weather and we may be forced to change the schedule according to Mother Nature’s whim.  Our partners at AMEC are expert in determining the best time and place to get on the ice and we count on them to make the right decisions regarding where and when. Flexibility is the key.  \nConsider staying over on Sunday to watch the AMEC racing.  If you want more time driving on the ice\, if the schedule permits AMEC may offer an introductory to racing program on Sunday. – 20 minutes of lapping in your own car for $20. Helmets are required but will be available on Sunday at no charge. Check out their website icerace.com for details.\n  \nCost \nThe cost is $125 for the day. You’ll be driving your own car. \n  \nA Note About Registration  \nWDS veterans are well aware that events held on frozen lakes are very dependent on the weather and ice conditions\, so be prepared for schedule changes.  As always\, we will keep you informed by email of changes which could include both date and venue.  Its highly recommended that you make any overnight reservations directly with your chosen hotel and verify a 24-hour cancelation policy. \nWe charge credit cards ONLY after the event is confirmed. Cancelation fees only apply if YOU cancel on a confirmed event. If the event is canceled or rescheduled there will be no cancellation fees. \nThis event often sells out quickly. Don’t worry – everyone’s status will be “waitlisted” initially and you will be notified by email status update if you are selected as an attendee. Once registration closes we will run the lottery and notify the “winners”. The lottery applies to students only. We will close registration in time to notify those who get in so you can make travel plans etc. Note that Audi Club members will be given priority in for these limited spots in this school.  If you are not an ACNA member and want to increase your chances of getting into this school\, please join the Audi Club \nFeel free to contact me\, Dave Klock\, with questions and remember we welcome friends and family members to come along and observe and if they would like to volunteer during the event that would be appreciated too. \n  \nTypical Schedule: \n7:30 – 8:00       Registration \n8:00 – 9:00       Welcome and Classroom with Drivers Meeting at 8:15 \n9:00 to 12:00    Exercises – We will break up into 3 groups for the skid pad\, slalom and road course working on the basics of car control in winter conditions \n12:00 to 1:00    Lunch / Drivers Meeting \n1:00 to 4:00      Run groups on the full track practicing the skills learned in the morning.\n  \nWhat You Will Learn: \nFirst\, how to make your car skid!…you can’t learn to get out of a skid if your car is not in a skid. We will then coach you through recovering from understeer\, oversteer and 4-wheel skids. You will be introduced to these terms in the classroom session prior to getting on the ice. You will also learn proper hand and seating position\, where to look (it’s not always out the windshield) and the nuances of getting your car back in control and have a ton of fun doing it.  \nFor those interested in learning more (maybe to join the ice racing community or just want more advanced skills) we can coach you on some of those skills too.\n  \nHow to Prepare:  \nFacilities will be very basic. Plan to spend the day outside. The only place to get warm other than lunch will be your car. Toilet facilities may be a porta potty or a local establishment off the ice depending on the venue. \nFacilities vary from lake to lake but we will have a building of some sort\, a restaurant or community building for registration\, classroom and lunch. You will be outside all day so dress accordingly. Layers and wind blocking outerwear is recommended.  Footwear is a tough choice shoes or boots need to be warm but also you need to be able to feel and manipulate peddles. If your boots are too bulky you will get tangled in the pedals and perhaps create a situation that ends up in a snow bank.  Consider two pair of boots one warm pair of pack boots and one pair of smaller insulated boots for driving.\n  \nAbout Tires \nNote we require winter specific tires: Studded or Non-Studded snow tires. If you have “all weather tires” such as Nokian Wgr series or Contintential DWS on an AWD car those are also allowed)\n \nFor further information on this event and all NEQ events and requirements\, please visit our website at www.NEQClub.org.  This web site has much useful information\, especially under the “Events” and “Web Articles” sections. You need not be an Audi Club member to participate.\nIf you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me\nDave Klock // Event Master.

SUMMARY:Brian Redman's Targa 66
DESCRIPTION:Targa Sixty Six was started in 1991 by Brian for owners of vintage and modern high performance and collector cars that do not necessarily wish to race them\, but who like to drive at speed under controlled conditions\, in the company of others with like interests. \n \nLocated in the tropics\, Miami offers an excellent climate for racing year-round\, with cool winters AND little precipitation. The road course in Homestead is the preferred layout for IndyCar and Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series\, among others. \n \nThe 2.21-mile (3.55-km) road course at Homestead–Miami Speedway starts in the 2-degree banked front stretch and snakes in the infield of the oval track with a total of 15 turns. Some of these turns are tight\, like turns three\, six\, or eight\, while others are fast sweepers like turns one\, five\, or ten. The average speed of the road course is 78 mph (125 km/h)\, with an average lap time of 1:42.4. There are several hard braking zones near the corners and excellent passing opportunities in the straight segments of the track. \nMORE DETAILS ON THE EVENT AVAILABLE HERE

SUMMARY:WDCR SCCA Virtual Racing League Spring 2023 Season\, Round #4
DESCRIPTION:Hey again WDCR! Wishing you all a delighted Valentine’s Day! Who wants some more iRacing action? Good thing we have some more VRL action for you this week!\n \nLast week\, we took our GR86s around VIR where we had three very dramatic finishes! In Race 1\, Ken Houseal made a pass on the final lap to take victory over Morgan Burkhard. In Race 2\, Robert Kucera kept his nose clean going into Roller Coaster on the final lap\, which gave him the victory over DJ Alessandrini. And in the Feature Race\, Andrew Pallotta stayed out of trouble and brought home the victory! Great job to all three of you\, gentlemen!\n \nThis week\, we’re trading in our GR86 for a GT4 and heading down under to one of Australia’s most famous race tracks in Bathurst! Opened amid the Great Depression as a scenic drive\, Bathurst quickly became a hot spot in the Australian racing scene for its challenge and flow. Going up Mount Panorama is one of the toughest challenges in all of racing. There is no room for error\, and you must make every little sweep count. Otherwise\, you could lose heaps of time to the car behind. Bathurst is a track that is truly like no other and a true test of man and machine!\n \nJoin us Wednesday\, February 13th at 8:00 on SYM TV as we take out GT4s around this truly incredible track! See you there!\n \n\n \nFor more information on Washington DC Region’s iRacing program\, visit https://www.wdcr-scca.org/virtual-racing or e-mail us!
